Roadside Seafood strives to “just let the food do the talking” | Food Chain
What’s that? One of Charleston’s first successful food trucks, Roadside Seafood also was among the first trucks to make a successful transition to a permanent location. Founded in 2014 by Sean and Cillie Mendes, the James Island restaurant is now overseen by Sean Mendes’ mother, Tanya, and her husband, Richard Perrine. (The Mendeses are busy down the block running Blue’s Cajun Kitchen and Gillie’s Soul Food.)
“Not a lot has changed with us, as we still like to keep everything plain and simple and just let the food do the talking,” Perrine says, alluding to Roadside’s highly regarded she-crab soup and fried shrimp, which helped win Mendes a South Carolina Chef Ambassador appointment.
He continues, “We have added some non-seafood items to the menu for landlubbers.” Still, the most popular addition is “Sharon’s Special,” a sampler platter including fried flounder, frog legs and crab balls.
Roadside also is in the market for a second location. “We may be getting close,” Perrine says.
Who recommends it? Sandra McCray of Dave’s Carry-Out.
Why? “It’s just nice down-home,” says McCray, who tends to gravitate toward fancier restaurants on the peninsula; she’s a longtime Magnolias partisan.
