The venues YOU eat at in Plymouth with a poor food hygiene record
The latest food hygiene ratings are online and they show 29 restaurants, outlets and places which serve food in Plymouth are still not up to scratch.
22 outlets have been awarded a one star ratings and two have been given zero star ratings, according to the latest figures from the Food Standards Agency (FSA).
The ratings are handed out by the Food Standards Agency after inspection carried out locally by the city council, and cover a range of food hygiene measures.
The highest anyone can score is five, while a rating of three is satisfactory – and below that are ratings of zero, one and two.
The city only has two outlets with a zero hygiene rating. The Embassy Club, 3-5 Wolseley Road, PL2 3AA requires urgent improvement, say inspectors.
Three outlets, American Fruity, Mrs Browns and Plaza Snooker Club are due to have their re-inspection ratings published soon.

A Plymouth City Council spokesperson said: “New ratings for some businesses have not yet been published as food businesses have 21 days to appeal the rating decision of the local authority if they do not agree with the inspector’s score.
“All other businesses’ ratings are as published but all of those rated at one or zero have had compliance checks since their inspections to make sure the most significant food hygiene risks have been dealt with.
“Their ratings will remain the same until their next unannounced inspection, unless they request a scheduled re-inspection before this time.”
Here are the full listings (provided by the Food Standards Agency after inspection by Plymouth City Council).
How does it work?
At the inspection, the officer checks various things such as:
- How hygienically the food is handled – how it is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored
- The condition of the structure of the buildings – the cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and other facilities
- How the business manages what it does to make sure food is safe and so that the officer can be confident standards will be maintained in the future
The hygiene standards found at the time of inspection are then rated on a scale.
At the top of the scale is ‘five’, meaning the food is very good, while ‘zero’ is at the bottom.
Businesses who receive this score, such as the aforementioned Plymouth Embassy Club, then they require urgent improvement.
We have contacted Plymouth City Council to ensure these hygiene rating are current and up to date. However, if any businesses mentioned here have different ratings after being re-inspected then please get in touch. Email firstname.lastname@example.org
